Hello! Here I am to deliver your critique for the Twelfth round of OC-training, for your character Poppy.

I’ll start with the character herself. My first impression of Poppy was someone dissatisfied or angry with her situation, which isn’t exactly the case. I must admit that I was expecting a very dark twist to her character, based on previous OCs you enrolled - but I was pleasantly surprised. While she definitely has a tragic backstory and suffers from needless guilt, she doesn’t seem to have a bad bone in her body… er… make that a bad circuit or bolt. The more I learned about her throughout the round, the more I liked her. Poppy is an absolute sweetheart, a genuinely kind and generous being. The desire to make people happy through sharing her music is wonderful; it’s a dream that would both satisfy herself, and bring joy to so many others. It’s interesting how her fear and anger tasks actually reflect each other - it is a fear of hers to be ridiculed, and yet she can’t stand anyone else being treated that way. Would she stick up for herself like she would for others?

The character design is exceptional; I think she really stands out amongst the characters enrolled this round. The details you put into her profile are striking, from all the segmented joints of her body, to her bright wavy red hair, and her beautiful teal eye. There is a very pretty contrast between those colors, and they work well with her metallic skin. Her whole wardrobe is cohesive, and seems very much like something one person would wear. I love the gothic lolita style, and she looks great in every one of the outfits. Fantastic job on designing Poppy and all of her lovely outfits.

Now, onto the art. I’ve always liked how you mix this cute chibi style with very dark themes, it’s a contrast that I thoroughly enjoy. You have a set and recognizable style, which is a great thing. I can always tell it’s your art when it shows up in the group.

Browsing through your gallery, I see that you don’t do it often, but the pieces that are shaded really stand out. Even the simple cell shading that you include adds a great deal to the art work. It really pays off when you put in the effort for a background, as well. The enjoyment task stands out to me most of the pieces you created this round. You clearly put a lot of effort into this one, with the detailed background, characters, and shading.

I would recommend adding shading more consistently, as it gives your artwork more dimension. It can be a tricky concept to figure out which direction the shading should go. This tutorial might help with that: https://www.deviantart.com/mayshing/art/How-to-cell-shade-shadows-dos-and-donts-319918527 Or this one, though it’s a bit more complicated, has some good information: https://www.deviantart.com/nsio/art/Nsio-Explains-Shading-Basics-647268365

I hope those help. :)

Overall I think that you did an excellent job this round, and showcased a wonderful character. Even being an artificial creation, Poppy has so much heart.

Keep up the great work and never stop creating!

It's much appreciated!
